About The Program -

The DoD-NPS HBCU/MI S4S Program allows competitively selected recent graduates to pursue their master’s degree in a variety of STEM fields relevant to the DoD in the first two years of their full-time federal government career.

Selected candidates will spend 24 months in the S4S Program with salary, tuition, & travel paid by DoD. The initial 18 months will be at Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, CA completing courses of study in a defense-focused learning environment. The last 6 months of the program will be spent at their identified Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR) or Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) location completing their thesis. Upon completion of the program, graduates have a 3-year service commitment to work at their respective NAVWAR or NAVAIR.

Program Objectives

Encourages students to pursue careers in STEM disciplines

Enlightens students on research areas relevant to Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of the Navy (DoN).

Promotes research and educational partnerships between HBCU/MSIs and government defense organizations.

Eligibility Requirement

Participants must be U.S. Citizens and eligible to receive a security clearance. Candidates must graduate by Spring 2025 from an accredited four-year academic institution deemed as an HBCU or MSI by the U.S. Department of Education with a field of study in STEM
